The Sleep Out Initiative
Sleep Out is a transformative overnight experience where our youth, partners, volunteers, and staff all come together in solidarity, either virtually or in-person. The night includes a series of impactful programs and workshops, then everyone sleeps outside overnight. In the morning there is a time for reflection with everyone that is always very moving.

About Sleep Out

Become a champion for our youth today by participating in one of our upcoming Sleep Outs. Choose which Sleep Out experience is best for you: virtual or in-person.

The funds raised by Sleepers and Sponsors through Sleep Out are a lifeline for youth overcoming homelessness. The movement includes executives, professionals, students, influencers, and individuals from across the state. Every participant sends a clear message to our youth that they are not alone.

Sleep Out FAQ's

How old do I need to be to participate in Sleep Out?

You need to be 22+ in order to Sleep Out on your own, otherwise a chaperone will need to join you. In the case of Student Sleep Outs, chaperones will be present for the group.

How do I get started?

You can easily register online as an individual Sleeper, or you can set yourself up as a Team Captain if you’re going to recruit others. If your organization has already set up a team, you can easily join their team.

Do I have to fundraise to participate in Sleep Out?

Yes! Fundraising is an essential part of Sleep Out and in fact, one of the largest sources of funds we have to help keep our doors open 24/7, 365 days a year, and provide all the services we offer to help our young people get back on their feet.

Can I invite my friends and family to sleep out too?

Yes, anyone can join you as long as they are eligible to participate.

How do I spread the word and raise awareness?

You can easily share the link to your Sleep Out page via email, text, and social media, then follow up with phone calls, or meet up in person. We will be here to help you along the way with easy-to-use tools.

What will I need to bring?

This night is meant to be spent in solidarity, so stick to the basics and plan to go without any luxury bedding items like pillows and blankets. Please bring a sleeping bag, any essential personal care items and wear layers (extra warm clothes including hats/gloves/extra socks). We will provide a cardboard box for you to sleep on under your sleeping bag.

What happens in inclement weather?

There will be an indoor option available at all times in the case of inclement weather, or if you just need to come inside to warm up or use the restrooms.

Can I sleep out at home or at another location other than the main site?

Yes, although the best experience is at a Covenant House site. If sleeping out at home or another location works better for you, that’s fine too, as long as we offer a virtual option for that particular Sleep Out. We will always appreciate your support of our youth and mission.

Will I be safe?

Yes, all Sleep Out locations will have the necessary security throughout the night.

Sponsorship Opportunities

Promote your business brand and community impact by being a Sleep Out sponsor.

Sponsorship levels range from $2,500-$25,000+ and include various levels of marketing support including corporate logo/name recognition on event communications, inclusion in local CHNJ press releases, recognition on social media channels, access to the Sleep Out program event, name recognition during the event, and name/logo recognition on the CHNJ website for up to 6 months.
